Lorenzo Dechalus (born September 17, 1968), known as Lord Jamar, is a Guyanese-American artist. He is a rapper, DJ, record producer, actor, and podcaster. He helped start the hip hop group Brand Nubian in 1989. Lord Jamar also helped the group Dead Prez get their first record deal in 1996.

Early Life and Hip Hop Beginnings
Lorenzo Dechalus was born in The Bronx, New York City. He grew up in New Rochelle, New York. His family has Afro-Guyanese roots from his father's side. He is the oldest of three brothers.
He first learned about hip hop music in the 1970s. A friend in his neighborhood introduced him to it. He would listen to tapes from famous groups like The Cold Crush Brothers and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. DJ Daryll C from Crash Crew often took him to hip hop shows in New York City.
Music Career and Acting Roles
Lord Jamar's group, Brand Nubian, released their first album, One for All, in 1990. Many people consider this album to be one of the best hip hop albums ever. Their third album, Everything Is Everything, came out in 1994.
In 1996, Lord Jamar helped the hip hop group Dead Prez sign with Loud Records. He also works as a producer for other artists. These artists include Dead Prez and Buckshot.
Lord Jamar is also known for his acting. He played the character Supreme Allah in the TV series Oz. He has also appeared in other popular TV shows. These include Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and The Sopranos.
His group, Brand Nubian, released their fourth album, Foundation, in 1998. Later, in 2006, Lord Jamar released his first solo album. It was called The 5% Album.
Today, Lord Jamar co-hosts a podcast called Yanadameen Godcast. He hosts it with fellow rapper Rah Digga.
