The Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester is a special person who represents the monarch, currently King Charles III, in the area called Greater Manchester. This area is in North West England. Since Greater Manchester is still part of the old Lancashire County Palatine, the King appoints the Lord Lieutenant in his role as the Duke of Lancaster.
This important job was created on 1 April 1974. Before that, different Lord Lieutenants covered parts of this area, like the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire, the Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, and a small part by the Lord Lieutenant of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The main goal of the Lord Lieutenant is to "uphold the dignity of the Crown." This means they help make sure the King's role is respected and honored. The Lord Lieutenant also acts as the Keeper of the Rolls, which means they are in charge of keeping important records. They also help promote the work of volunteer groups and charities.
The Lord Lieutenant gets help from more than seventy people called deputy lieutenants.
