Lord of Annandale facts for kids
The Lordship of Annandale was a special area in southern Scotland, in a place called Annandale. It was like a mini-kingdom or a large estate ruled by a powerful lord. This lordship was created by David I of Scotland, who was the King of Scotland, sometime before 1124. He gave it to one of his loyal followers, a man named Robert de Brus.
This lordship was important because it controlled a key part of Scotland and was held by many powerful families over the centuries, including the ancestors of King Robert the Bruce.

Who Ruled the Lordship of Annandale?
Many different lords held control of Annandale over the years. Here is a list of some of the most important ones:
The Early Brus Lords
- Robert de Brus, 1st Lord of Annandale: He was the first lord, ruling from around 1113 or 1124 until 1138.
- Robert de Brus, 2nd Lord of Annandale: He took over from his father and ruled from 1138 until 1194.
- William de Brus, 3rd Lord of Annandale: He was lord from 1194 to about 1211 or 1212.
- Robert de Brus, 4th Lord of Annandale: He ruled from around 1211 or 1212 until 1226 or 1233.
- Robert de Brus, 5th Lord of Annandale: He was lord from 1226 or 1233 until 1292. He gave up the lordship when John Balliol became King of Scotland in 1292.
Changes in Leadership
- Robert de Brus, 6th Lord of Annandale: He was lord from 1292 to 1295. He was also known as the Earl of Carrick because of his marriage.
- John Comyn III of Badenoch: He held Annandale from 1295 to 1296. The lordship was taken from Robert de Brus and given to John Comyn because Robert refused to join the Scottish army.
- Robert de Brus, 6th Lord of Annandale: He got the lordship back in 1296 and held it until 1304.

- Archibald Douglas, 13th Lord of Annandale: He was lord from 1401 or 1409 until 1424.
- Archibald Douglas, 14th Lord of Annandale: He held the lordship from 1424 to 1439.
- William Douglas, 15th Lord of Annandale: He was lord from 1439 to 1440.
