Early Life and Family Connections
Robert de Brus was the son of William de Brus, 3rd Lord of Annandale. His mother was Christina mac Uchtred. Robert was named after his uncle and his grandfather. His uncle passed away before he could become the Lord of Annandale. Because of this, Robert's father, William, inherited the title instead.
Marriage and Children
Around 1219, Robert de Brus married Isobel of Huntingdon. She was the second daughter of David of Scotland, 8th Earl of Huntingdon. This marriage was very important because it brought Robert new lands in England. He gained control of areas like Writtle and Hatfield Broadoak in Essex.
Robert and Isobel had three children:
- Robert de Brus, 5th Lord of Annandale: He later became the 5th Lord of Annandale. He married Isabella de Clare first, and they had children. Later, he married Christina de Ireby, but they did not have children.
- Bernard de Brus of Exton: He married Alice de Beauchamp and later Constance de Merston. Bernard was the father of Sir Bernard de Brus II.
- Beatrice de Brus: She married a man named Hugo de Neville.
Later Life and Legacy
Robert de Brus died in 1232. His wife, Isobel, lived longer than him. He was buried in a special family burial place called Gisborough Priory. This priory was important to his family for many years.
