A Look Back: History of Los Aldamas

The story of Los Aldamas began a long time ago, with its roots in a place once known as Puerto de Hoyos.

Early Beginnings

In 1760, some Franciscan priests (who were religious leaders) started a settlement here. They called it Guadalupe Mission. This area, Puerto de Hoyos, was a useful spot because it had water for cattle, right on the west bank of the San Juan River.

Becoming a Town

Years later, on Christmas Eve in 1825, something big happened. The Congress (a group of lawmakers) of the new state of Nuevo León decided to create a new town. This new town was to be at Puerto de Los Hoyos and was named Villa de Santa María de Aldama.

Just a few years later, in 1829, the name changed again. It became Villa de Santa María de Los Aldamas. The extra "s" was added to make sure people didn't confuse it with another town called Villa de Aldama in Nuevo León. The name honored two brave brothers, Juan Aldama and Ignacio Aldama. They were heroes during the Mexican War of Independence, when Mexico fought for its freedom.

A Place of Importance

Los Aldamas played an important role during the Mexican Revolution. This was a big conflict in Mexico's history. For a few months, from February to May in 1914, Los Aldamas actually served as the temporary capital of the state. This means it was where the state government was located for a short time during that period of change.
