About Los Altares
Where is Los Altares?
The rural community of Los Altares is found in the Los Altares Valley. This valley is in the middle of Chubut Province. It's a dry, semi-desert area. You can reach Los Altares by following National Route 25. It's about 230 kilometers (143 miles) from Trelew and 323 kilometers (201 miles) from Esquel.
Amazing Rock Formations
Los Altares gets its name from the incredible rock formations around it. The word "Altares" means "altars" in Spanish. There are about 80 kilometers (50 miles) of rock walls in the nearby valley. These walls can be up to 70 meters (230 feet) tall! They look like giant altars. This type of land is common in the Patagonian Steppe in central Argentina.
Ancient Art and People
Near Los Altares, there's an important site with ancient rock art. This art was made by the Tehuelche people around the tenth century. The site is now protected by the Provincial Cultural Authority. One painting is 90 by 53 centimeters (35 by 21 inches). It was made using mineral colors mixed with natural materials.
The people living in the area today are descendants of the native Tehuelche people. They are skilled artisans. They can even craft arrowheads if visitors ask them to.
Climate
Los Altares has a cold desert climate. This means it's generally dry with big temperature changes between day and night, and between summer and winter.
