Loudoun Heights is a small community in Loudoun County, Virginia. It is located very close to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. This area is special because it is surrounded by beautiful natural features. The Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is nearby, along the Potomac River. The Blue Ridge Mountains and Short Hill Mountain also border the community.
History
Loudoun Heights has an important place in American history, especially during the American Civil War. This high ground was a key location for soldiers.
The Battle of Harpers Ferry
From September 12 to 15, 1862, during the Battle of Harpers Ferry, Confederate General John George Walker and his troops occupied Loudoun Heights. They used its high position to their advantage during the battle.
Mosby's Rangers Attack
Later, on January 10, 1864, Loudoun Heights was the site of a night attack. A famous group of Confederate soldiers, known as Mosby's Rangers, launched this surprise attack. They were led by Colonel John S. Mosby.
Mosby's Rangers attacked Union cavalry soldiers. These Union troops were from the 1st Potomac Home Brigade Maryland Volunteer Cavalry, led by Major Henry A. Cole. However, Mosby's attack was not successful. This event marked the end of a long series of battles between Mosby's Rangers and Cole's cavalry.
