Louis-Antoine de Bougainville was a famous French admiral and navigator. He is best known for leading the first French trip around the world. This amazing journey, called a circumnavigation, took place from 1766 to 1769.

Exploring the World
In 1766, the French government sent Bougainville on a special mission. His goal was to sail around the entire world. This was a huge challenge and a very important trip for France.
His Big Trip Around the World
Bougainville's journey lasted three years, from 1766 to 1769. During this time, he sailed across vast oceans. He explored many new places and made important discoveries.
He rediscovered the Solomon Islands in 1768. These islands are in the Pacific Ocean. The largest island in this group is now named Bougainville, after him.
Scientific Discoveries
Bougainville was not just an explorer; he was also a scientist. On his voyage, he collected many different plants. He also made very accurate maps of parts of the central Pacific Ocean. These maps helped future sailors navigate safely.
He even saw a part of the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia. However, he was not able to find the continent of Australia itself.
