Life and Ministry
Early Life and Education
Louis Dicaire was born in Montreal, Canada. He went to school at Collège André-Grasset and Collège Saint-Jean-Vianney. He earned his first university degree, a bachelor's degree in theology, in 1973.
Becoming a Priest
Dicaire became a priest on January 20, 1974. Later, in 1983, he earned a master's degree in Pastoral Care from the Université de Sherbrooke.
Further Studies in Rome
From 1983 to 1985, Dicaire traveled to Rome, Italy. There, he studied dogmatic theology and sacramental theology. He attended the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical Atheneum of St. Anselm. After his studies, he worked in several parishes, which are local church communities.
Roles and Responsibilities
Dicaire held many important roles in the church. He was a chaplain for the Mount Royal Scouts and Guides. A chaplain is a priest who serves a specific group outside of a regular parish. He also worked as an episcopal secretary. The Holy See named him a Chaplain of His Holiness, which is an honorary title.
From 1996 to 1999, he was an episcopal vicar for East Montreal. This means he helped the bishop manage a specific area.
Becoming a Bishop
In 1999, Louis Dicaire was named an Auxiliary Bishop of Montreal. He also became the Titular Bishop of Thizica. A titular bishop is given a title from a historical diocese that no longer exists. He was officially made a bishop on March 25 by Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte. Until 2002, he was in charge of parish facilities.
In 2001, Dicaire was appointed Vicar General of the Archdiocese for one year. A vicar general helps the bishop manage the entire diocese. He also became the Rector of the Mary, Queen of the World, Cathedral in Montreal. The rector is the main priest in charge of a cathedral.
In June 2004, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saint-Jean-Longueuil. He also served on committees for liturgy, theology, and social communications for the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Quebec.
Death
Louis Dicaire passed away on July 19, 2020, in his hometown of Montreal.
