Louis the Stammerer (born November 1, 846, died April 10, 879) was a king of France. He was also known as Louis le Bègue in French. Louis was the oldest son of Charles the Bald and Ermentrude of Orléans.
Louis became King of France in 877, after his father passed away. Unlike his father, Louis never became the Holy Roman Emperor.
Becoming King
Louis the Stammerer was crowned king by Pope John VIII in 878. This was an important event for him as a new ruler.
His Family
Louis the Stammerer was married two times.
- With his first wife, Ansgarde of Burgundy, he had two sons:
- Louis III (born in 863)
- Carloman II (born in 866)
- Both of these sons later became kings of France.
- Louis and Ansgarde also had two daughters: Hildegarde (born in 864) and Gisela (865–884).
- With his second wife, Adelaide of Paris, Louis had one daughter, Ermentrude (875–914).
- They also had a son named Charles the Simple. Charles was born after his father died, which is called a posthumous birth. He also grew up to become a king of France.
