Lovely Banks is a suburb located in the northern part of Geelong, Victoria, Australia. It used to be a farming and country area. Now, it's quickly growing into a place where people live. It is right next to other Geelong suburbs like Bell Park, Corio, and Norlane. In 2016, a count of people showed that 2,301 people lived in Lovely Banks.

What's in a Name?

The name "Lovely Banks" probably describes the area itself. To the west, the land goes up quite steeply. It rises from about 30 to 100 meters above the sea. This high ground gives amazing views of Geelong and Corio Bay.

A Look at the Past

Lovely Banks has a bit of history with its post office. A post office opened around 1902. It was first called "Lovely Banks Reservoir." Then, in 1907, its name changed to "Lovely Banks." This post office served the community until it closed in 1960.

There is also an important bridge nearby. The Cowies Creek Rail Bridge No. 1 is on the railway line that connects Geelong and Ballarat. This bridge is very old and special. It is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, which means it's a protected historical site.

How Many People Lived Here?

We can see how Lovely Banks has grown by looking at past population numbers:

  • In 1911, only 94 people lived here.
  • By 1961, the population had grown a bit to 114 people.
  • In 2016, the population was 2,301.

Geelong Ring Road Changes

The construction of the Geelong Ring Road By Pass brought big changes to Lovely Banks. This new freeway partly separated Lovely Banks from its closest neighbours. These neighbours include Bell Park, Corio, and Norlane.

Some roads, like Purnell and Goldsworthy Roads, had to be closed. This was done to make space for the new freeway. Now, you can get to Lovely Banks using the new Anakie Road overpass. This overpass was built as part of the Geelong By Pass project.
