The History of Lovespoons
Lovespoons are a very old tradition. This special craft started many centuries ago. Over time, people added more and more detailed carvings to the spoons. Because of these fancy designs, the spoons stopped being used for eating. They became treasured decorative items instead.
The oldest known lovespoon from Wales is from 1667. You can see it at the St Fagans National History Museum near Cardiff. However, people believe the tradition started even earlier than that. The oldest lovespoon found anywhere in the world is from Germany. It dates back to 1664.
Meanings of Lovespoon Symbols
A young man would give a lovespoon to the young woman he liked. It was important for her father to see that the young man was good at woodworking. This showed he could provide for a family.
Sailors often carved lovespoons during their long trips at sea. This is why you might see anchors carved into some spoons.
Different symbols on the spoons had special meanings:
- A horseshoe meant good luck.
- A cross stood for faith.
- Bells meant marriage.
- Hearts, of course, meant love.
- A wheel showed support for a loved one.
- A lock meant security.
- Caged balls showed how many children the carver hoped to have.
Some carvings, like chains, were very difficult to make. They showed off the carver's amazing skill.
While Welsh lovespoons are the most famous, other countries also have similar traditions. You can find lovespoons in Scandinavia and parts of Eastern Europe. These places have their own unique styles and carving methods.
Today, people give lovespoons for many happy occasions. They are popular gifts for weddings and anniversaries. They are also given for birthdays, baby showers, Christmas, or Valentine's Day. Lovespoons are now mostly seen as a beautiful folk craft.
Wedding Spoons and Their Meaning
In old Norway, newly married couples sometimes ate with special linked spoons. These spoons were connected to each other. This symbolized how the husband and wife were now linked together in their marriage. Often, the spoons and the chain connecting them were carved from a single piece of wood. This showed off the carver's great skill.
You can find similar linked spoons in some museums that display old cultural items. A design for making linked spoons was even published in a magazine called Popular Science in 1967.
