The Amelanchier humilis, often called the low shadbush, is a cool plant found in North America. It belongs to a group of plants known as serviceberries.
This special shrub grows naturally across a large area. You can find it in central Canada, from Saskatchewan all the way to Québec. It also grows in the northeastern and north-central United States, stretching from Nebraska and the Dakotas east to states like Vermont and New Jersey.
What is the Low Shadbush?
The low shadbush is a type of shrub. This means it's a woody plant, but it's smaller than a tree. It usually grows to be about 120 centimeters (or 4 feet) tall. That's about as tall as a grown-up's waist!
Its Unique Features
The fruit of the low shadbush is quite interesting. It's a type of fruit called a pome, just like an apple or a pear. When it's ripe, the fruit is very dark, almost black.
The fruit is safe to eat! You can enjoy it raw, right off the plant, or you can cook with it. It has a sweet taste, and many people notice a slight apple flavor, which makes it extra yummy.
The leaves of the low shadbush are shaped like an egg. They can grow up to 5 centimeters (about 2 inches) long.
