Lower King is a small town located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. It is about 385 kilometers (239 miles) south-east of Perth. The closest larger town is Albany, which is only 8 kilometers (5 miles) away.

History of Lower King

Lower King is situated along the lower part of the King River. It is also found on the western shore of Oyster Harbour. Both the town and the river were named after Captain Philip Parker King. He was an explorer who first visited this area in 1818. He arrived on his ship called the Mermaid.

The area around Lower King was known as a place where sealers often visited in 1831. People started to settle here in the 1830s. However, the townsite was not officially recognized until 1959.

Lower King has seen its population grow over the years. In 2006, about 1,604 people lived in the town. By 2011, the number of residents had increased to 1,738. This shows that more and more people are choosing to call Lower King home.
