Lower Myanmar facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lower Myanmar (also known as Lower Burma) is a special part of Myanmar, a country in Southeast Asia. It's a low-lying area that includes the Irrawaddy Delta, which is like a big river mouth where the Irrawaddy River flows into the sea. This region also has beautiful coastal areas along the sea.

In the local Burmese language, people from Lower Myanmar are sometimes called auk tha (for men) or auk thu (for women). This helps tell them apart from people who come from Upper Myanmar.

A Look Back: How Lower Myanmar Became What It Is

Historically, Lower Myanmar became a very important region after the British Empire took control of it. This happened after a big conflict called the Second Anglo-Burmese War in 1879. Before that, in 1826, the British had already gained control of areas like Arakan and Tenasserim through a peace agreement called the Treaty of Yandabo.

Lower Myanmar's main city was Rangoon (which is now called Yangon). This region included all the coastlines of modern Myanmar and also the lower part of the Irrawaddy River basin, reaching up to a city called Prome.

Who Lived There? Early People of Lower Myanmar

For a long time, until the early 1800s, Lower Myanmar was mostly home to two main groups of people: the Mon and the Karen tribes. The Mon people, especially, had a strong history and culture in this area.
