Ltyentye Apurte, also known as Santa Teresa, is a community in the Northern Territory, Australia. Many people living here are part of the Arrernte Indigenous community. Their traditional lands are located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) south-east of Alice Springs.

A Look at Ltyentye Apurte's Past

How the Community Started

The Ltyentye Apurte community began as a mission. In 1953, a mission run by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart moved here from Arltunga. This mission included a school and places for Aboriginal children aged 5 to 17 to live. They also had a hospital to provide care.

Changes Over the Years

In 1976, the way the community was managed changed. It was no longer run by the Mission. Instead, it was handed over to an Aboriginal land trust. At this time, the community was officially renamed Ltyentye Apurte. The part of the school where children lived closed, but the day school is still open and run by the church.

Art and Culture in Ltyentye Apurte

The Keringke Arts Centre was started in 1989. This center helps local artists share their culture through art. Since 2007, women in the community have been painting special religious crosses. These beautiful crosses are sent to Catholic churches all around the world.

Community Growth and Population

The number of people living in Ltyentye Apurte has changed over time. In 1996, there were 458 residents. This number grew to 932 in 2011. Later, it was 684 in 2016 and 708 in 2021.

The community of Ltyentye Apurte is managed by a Community Government Council. This council helps run important services for the residents. For example, they manage the local health service, which even has a special room for dialysis treatment.

Important Community Facilities

Ltyentye Apurte has several key facilities. There is a Catholic primary and senior school for students. The community also has a police station to help keep everyone safe. An airstrip makes it easier for people and supplies to come and go. There is also a Catholic Church. Since July 1, 2008, the MacDonnell Shire has been the main local government for the area.

Australian Rules Football

Australian rules football is very popular in Ltyentye Apurte. The community has its own stadium, called the Santa Teresa Local Stadium. In 2021, the sandy field was changed to a grassy one. This project was a partnership with the Melbourne Football Club Red and Blue Foundation, which is part of the AFL.

Awards and Recognition

Australia's Most Sustainable Community

In 2019, Ltyentye Apurte received a special award. It won the Australian Tidy Town Awards competition. This means Ltyentye Apurte was named Australia's most sustainable Community for that year.
