Luciano De Crescenzo (Italian pronunciation: [luˈtʃaːno de kreʃˈʃɛntso]) was a famous Italian writer, actor, director, and engineer. He was born on August 18, 1928, in Naples, Italy. Luciano passed away on July 18, 2019, in Rome, Italy, at the age of 90. He was known for making complex ideas, like philosophy, easy and fun to understand.
Life and Career
Luciano De Crescenzo was born in Naples, Italy. He even grew up with the famous actor Bud Spencer! Luciano studied engineering and worked as an engineer for a big company called IBM Italy. He did this until 1976.
In 1977, Luciano published his first book, Così parlò Bellavista (which means Thus Spoke Bellavista). This book was a huge success, selling 600,000 copies in Italy! It was a collection of interesting facts and funny stories about his hometown, Naples. The book was so popular that it was translated into many different languages.
Luciano then started working in movies and television. In 1980, he first appeared as an actor in the film Il pap'occhio. His friend Renzo Arbore directed the movie, and Roberto Benigni also starred in it. In 1981, he made his TV debut with Renzo Arbore and Lory Del Santo in a popular show called Tagli, ritagli e frattaglie.
In 1984, Luciano directed a successful movie based on his book, Così parlò Bellavista. He also played the main character in the film! He directed another movie called Il mistero di Bellavista in 1985. Later, in 1995, he wrote and directed Croce e delizia, which featured actors Teo Teocoli and Isabella Rossellini.
Luciano wrote many more books over the years. These included novels and books that explained Greek philosophy in a simple way. Because of his work on Greek philosophy, he was given honorary citizenship of Athens, Greece, in 1994. Between 1977 and 2019, he published fifty books in total. His books sold 18 million copies around the world, with 7 million sold in Italy alone. His works were translated into 19 languages and published in 25 countries.
