Lucy Ella Moten was an amazing American teacher and doctor. She lived from 1851 to 1933. Dr. Moten was the head of The Miner School for many years, from 1883 to 1920. This school trained African-American teachers in Washington, D.C.. Thanks to her, many teachers were ready to work in schools for African-American children.

Early Life

Lucy Moten was born free in Fauquier County, Virginia. Her parents, Julija and Benjamin Moten, were also free African Americans. Her family moved to Washington D.C. This move helped Lucy get a better education. At that time, public schools in Washington D.C. were separated by race until 1954.

Education and Learning

Lucy Moten studied at Howard University for two years. She then went to the State Normal School in Salem, Massachusetts. She finished her studies there in 1875. In 1883, she graduated from Spencerian Business College.

Later, Lucy Moten decided to become a doctor. She earned her medical degree (M.D.) from the Howard University Medical College in 1897. She also studied education at New York University at a higher level.

Her Career as an Educator

After her schooling, Lucy Moten returned to Washington D.C. She began teaching in public schools for African Americans. One of the schools she taught at was the O Street School.

In 1883, a famous African-American leader named Frederick Douglass suggested her for an important job. He recommended her to be the principal of the Miner Normal School. This school was very important because it trained African-American teachers.

While leading the Miner School, Dr. Moten decided to get her medical degree. She wanted to better care for her students' health. She also created a new class on hygiene for them. During her summer breaks, she often taught classes for other teachers in the southern United States.

Later Life and Legacy

Lucy Moten retired in 1920. She then moved to New York City. Sadly, she passed away in 1933 after being hit by a taxi.

Today, there is a school named after her in Washington, D.C. It is called Moten Elementary School. This school honors her important work as an educator and doctor.
