Lucy McRae (born 1979) is a super creative artist from Australia. She was born in London, England. Lucy is known for her amazing science fiction art. She creates art that explores how our bodies might change in the future. She uses film, photos, sculptures, and even special edible and wearable technology in her art.

What Lucy McRae Does

Lucy McRae uses technology and design to create something she calls "body architecture." This means she explores how our bodies can change and adapt. She looks at how future science and technology might affect us. Her art shows how our bodies and feelings react to these new ideas.

Her work has been shown in many famous places. These include the Science Museum London and the Royal Academy of Arts. Her art has also been seen at the Centre Pompidou and the Venice Biennale. She has given talks at top universities like MIT and RMIT University. Fast Company magazine even named her one of the "fifty people shaping the future."

Lucy's Journey

Lucy McRae was born in London in 1979. She first trained in classical ballet in Melbourne, Australia. Later, she studied interior design at RMIT University. After finishing her studies, she moved to London.

In 2006, she started working at Philips Design in the Netherlands. There, she led a special research lab. This lab focused on "Far Future Design" and how emotions could be sensed. Her team developed cool wearable technology. This included a dress that changed based on how the person wearing it felt. They also worked on electronic tattoos that could change with a touch.

Amazing Inventions

One of her famous creations was the Bubelle Blush dress. This dress could sense the wearer's emotions. Then, it would show those feelings as lights on the outside layers of the dress. Time magazine called this dress one of the best inventions of 2007.

While at Philips Design, Lucy met another designer named Bart Hess. Together, they started a photography project called "LucyandBart." They used different materials to change human bodies and faces into unique art.

In 2010, Lucy received an award to work with RMIT University. She gave lectures and workshops. She also had her own art show called 'Breed Out' in Melbourne.

Exploring the Body's Future

Lucy McRae also created "Swallowable Parfume." She made this with a scientist named Sheref Mansy. It's a special pill that has a fragrant molecule inside. This molecule is like the natural fat molecules in our bodies. After the body uses these molecules, fragrant smells are released through sweat on the skin.

In 2012, Lucy was invited to join the TED Fellowship program. She gave a talk at TED Long Beach. Her talk was about "How can technology transform the body?"

She also showed her 'Future Day Spa' at the London Design Festival. In this experience, people could feel relaxed and weightless. They were gently wrapped in a plastic-foil membrane inside a special chamber. It was like getting ready for space travel!

Her short film, 'Institute of Isolation,' asks big questions. It explores how our bodies and minds can stay healthy in extreme places. This includes long periods of isolation, like during space travel.

In 2018, Lucy worked with researchers from the University of Melbourne. They created 'Biometric mirror.' This sci-fi art piece was part of an exhibition called 'Perfection.' The Biometric mirror used computer programs to show what a "mathematically perfect" face might look like.

In 2019, a big exhibition of Lucy McRae's work was held. It was at the National Gallery of Victoria. The show was called 'Lucy McRae: Body Architect.' It displayed her amazing creations from over thirteen years.
