History of Ludlow
Ludlow has a cool history! It started as a prairie town in northern Champaign County, Illinois. Back then, it was called Pera Station. It was an important stop on the Illinois Central Railroad. This railroad helped connect small towns and made it easier to trade goods between Urbana and Loda.
The village got its new name, Ludlow, in 1868. It was named after James D. Ludlow, who was a big investor in the railroad. When the railroad was built, many people moved to Ludlow. They liked the rich soil and wide-open prairies.
Ludlow grew quickly in its early years. James Ludlow even gave land to help the village expand. Soon, there were two churches, which became places for the community to gather. The village also got a hardware store and two blacksmith shops. In 1904, the "Ludlow Co-Op Elevator Company" was started. This company still helps the community today and has grown to 11 locations!
In 1949, the "Ludlow Fire Protection District" was created to keep everyone safe. Later, in the 1970s, Ludlow got money to improve its roads and drainage systems. They also built a new community center. Today, Ludlow continues to grow, with its own police services and a local post office.
