The Ludwig and Christina Welk Homestead is a historic farm house in Strasburg, North Dakota. It was built way back in 1893. This special place is also known as the Lawrence Welk Birthplace. On March 11, 1903, a famous American musician named Lawrence Welk was born here. He was a great accordion player, a bandleader, and even had his own TV show! His parents, Ludwig and Christina Welk, were from a region called Alsace-Lorraine in Europe, and they had lived in Odessa, Ukraine before coming to America. Because of its history, the homestead was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 28, 1993.
About the Welk Homestead
The Ludwig and Christina Welk Homestead is a very important historical site. It shows what farm life was like in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The homestead is officially called the Ludwig and Christina Welk Farmstead. It has been carefully fixed up to look like it did when the Welk family lived there.
Restoring the Farmhouse
Local volunteers work hard to keep the homestead in good shape. One of these volunteers is Lawrence Welk's niece, Edna Schwab. It might seem surprising, but Lawrence Welk, even though he was famous, asked that none of his own money be used to restore his birthplace. He did, however, give money to other projects in the area.
