Luis Alfonso de Carvallo (born in 1571, died on February 2, 1635) was a Spanish priest and an important historian from Asturias. People often called him "Padre Carvallo." He was a member of the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. He lived during the late 1500s and early 1600s and wrote a lot about the history of his home region.

Life of Luis Alfonso de Carvallo

Luis Alfonso de Carvallo was born in 1571 in a poor part of Cangas de Tineo. This town is now called Cangas del Narcea and is a main city in Asturias, Spain.

When he was a boy, Carvallo became a Benedictine monk. Monks are religious men who live in a community and dedicate their lives to prayer and work. He joined the Abbey of San Juan Bautista de Corias, which was nearby.

In 1601, he moved to a different monastery for a short time. After returning to Asturias, he became the Rector (which is like a principal or head) of the College of San Gregorio in Oviedo.

The college grew and became the University of Oviedo in 1608. Carvallo then became a Humanities professor at this new university. Humanities subjects include history, literature, and philosophy. At the same time, he also managed the old documents at the Oviedo Cathedral. He was also named a member of the cathedral chapter, which is a group of clergy who advise the bishop.

In 1616, Carvallo left the Benedictine Order. He then joined the Society of Jesus, a different religious order. He stayed a Jesuit until he passed away in Villagarcía de Campos in 1635.

Carvallo's Legacy

Carvallo wrote some poetry, but he is best known for his detailed books about the ancient history of Asturias. These works are still considered very important in Asturian historiography, which is the study of how history is written. Many of his original handwritten books, called manuscripts, are still kept safe at the Real Academia de la Historia (Royal Academy of History) in Spain.

List of Works

Here are some of Luis Alfonso de Carvallo's most famous works:

  • Cisne de Apolo (meaning Apollo's Swan) (1602)
  • Historia de las Antigüedades y cosas memorables del Principado de Asturias (meaning History of the Antiquity and memorable things of the Principality of Asturias). This book was finished in 1613 but was published much later in 1695, after his death. When something is published after someone dies, it's called a posthumous work.
