Luis Jesús Fernández de Córdoba y Salabert, 17th Duke of Medinaceli (born January 16, 1880 – died July 13, 1956), was a Spanish nobleman. He was also a very famous hunter and explorer. He was born with many important titles. In fact, he was known as the most titled person in the world at the time. This was because his father, the 16th Duke, had passed away before Luis was born.

Early Life of a Duke

Luis was born in Madrid, Spain. He was the only son of the 16th Duke of Medinaceli. His mother was Casilda Remigia de Salabert y Arteaga. Luis was born a few months after his father died in a hunting accident. This meant he inherited all his family's important titles right from birth.

His mother later remarried a politician named Mariano Fernández de Henestrosa. Through this marriage, Luis gained two half-siblings, Rafael and Casilda.

Family Life and Marriages

In 1911, Luis married Ana María Fernández de Henestrosa y Gayoso de los Cobos. She was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Ena of Spain. Their wedding took place in Madrid.

Luis and Ana María had two daughters together:

Sadly, his first wife, Ana María, passed away in 1938. Luis remarried in 1939 to María de la Concepción Rey de Pablo Blanco. With his second wife, he had one more daughter:

  • Casilda Fernández de Córdoba y de Pablo Blanco (born 1941 – died 1998). She became the 20th Duchess of Cardona.

Adventures and Discoveries

Luis was a passionate hunter and explorer. He loved hunting and horse-riding, a hobby he inherited from his grandmother. He was also a tireless traveler. He went on many expeditions around the world.

In 1929, King Alfonso XIII gave him a special honor called the Order of the Golden Fleece. This was a very important award.

Luis was very interested in falconry, which is the sport of hunting with trained birds of prey. He did a lot of research on this topic. He even founded the Spanish Museum of Trophy Hunting. In 1927, he became a member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences. His first speech there was about birds of prey used in falconry.

He was known as one of the best big-game hunters in Europe. He went on exciting expeditions to British East Africa (in 1908-1909) and even to the North Pole (in 1910 and 1921). He also wrote many books and articles about hunting and nature.

Luis had a large collection of natural history items. He even started a museum in his palace in Madrid. However, during the Spanish Civil War in 1936, his collection had to be moved to the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, a national science museum.

Luis Fernández de Córdoba passed away on July 13, 1956, in Madrid. He is buried in the Basilica of Jesus de Medinaceli in Madrid.
