Luis Peña Ganchegui (born March 29, 1926, in Oñati, Guipúzcoa – died April 2, 2009, in San Sebastián) was an important Spanish architect. He is known for being one of the first to bring modern architecture to Spain.

What Was His Early Life and Education Like?

Luis Peña Ganchegui studied architecture at the Superior Technical School of Architecture of Madrid. He finished his studies and graduated in 1959. In the same year, he started teaching. First, he taught in Barcelona, and later in San Sebastián. In San Sebastián, he became a professor in 1982. He also served as a deputy director there starting in 1983.

What Was His Political Involvement?

In 1956, Luis Peña joined a group called the University Socialist Group. This group was led by people like Víctor Pradera Larumbe. He was held for a short time in Pamplona in March 1956 because of his activities with this group. Other well-known people, like Juan Benet and Luis Martín-Santos, were also part of this group.

What Were His Famous Architectural Works?

Luis Peña Ganchegui worked on many projects. Many of his most famous buildings and designs are in the Basque Country. His most well-known work is called the Comb of the Wind. He created this amazing artwork with the famous sculptor Eduardo Chillida.

They also worked together on the Plaza de los Fueros in Vitoria. This was another important public space they designed. Luis Peña Ganchegui also designed the Amara Plaza Hotel in San Sebastián. One of his last projects was improving the square in Pasai San Juan.

What Awards Did He Receive?

Luis Peña Ganchegui received several important awards for his work:

  • 1999: He won the Antonio Camuñas Architecture Prize. This award recognized his entire career as an architect.
  • 2004: He was given the Gold Medal of Architecture. This is a very high honor from the Superior Council of the Colleges of Architects of Spain.
  • 2007: He received the COAVN Architecture Award. This was for his excellent work in urban design and landscaping.
