Oñati (Basque: Oñati, Spanish: Oñate) is a lovely town in the northern part of Spain. It is located in the Basque Country, which is a special region in Spain. The town is part of the Gipuzkoa province.

About 10,500 people live in Oñati. It sits in a beautiful valley right in the middle of the Basque Country. The town is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of the Bay of Biscay. It is also about 236 meters (774 feet) above sea level. The name Oñati comes from the Basque language. It means "place of many hills," which perfectly describes the area. Green mountains surround the town on three sides. On the southern side, you can see the Aloña limestone formation.

Cool Places to See

Oñati has many old and interesting buildings. Some of these date back to the Medieval period.

The Old University

The University of Oñati is in the town's center. It is one of the oldest university buildings on the Iberian Peninsula. This means it is one of the oldest in Spain and Portugal. Today, this historic building is home to the International Institute for the Sociology of Law. It is a place where people study how laws work in society.

Other Important Buildings

Other important places to visit include the monastery and hospice of Bidaurreta. The Church of Saint Michael is also a significant site. These buildings show the long history of the town.

Sanctuary of Arantzazu

Above the city, you will find the Sanctuary of Arantzazu. This place is famous for its Pilgrimage Church of Our Lady. A shepherd is said to have found a figure of the Virgin Mary here in 1469. The original chapel from the 1500s was replaced in 1950. It is a very important place for many people.
