Luis Adalberto Puenzo (born 19 February 1946) is a famous Argentine film director, producer, and screenplay writer. He has made many movies in Argentina and also worked in the United States.

Life and Career

Puenzo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1946. He started his career in 1965 by making TV advertising commercials. He even started his own production company, which was first called Luis Puenzo Cinema. Later, its name changed to Cinemanía S.A.

During a difficult time in Argentina (the military government) in the 1970s and early 1980s, many filmmakers faced problems. Some even had to leave the country or went missing. Because of this, Puenzo chose to focus on making advertisements for a while.

In the United States, he is well-known for his film Old Gringo (1989). This movie starred famous actors like Gregory Peck, Jane Fonda, and Jimmy Smits.

His film The Official Story (1985) is very important. It won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, which is a huge honor. It also received many other awards.

Luis Puenzo was also the president of the INCAA, which is Argentina's national film institute. He held this position when Alberto Fernández was president of Argentina.

He is the father of another talented filmmaker, Lucía Puenzo, who is also a screenwriter and director.

About The Official Story

The Official Story is considered by many to be Puenzo's best film. Film critics and experts have praised it for telling a story that helps us understand important issues in Argentina and Latin America.

The movie shows how big problems can affect people in a very personal way. This helps viewers connect with the story and understand its impact. Even today, The Official Story is often shown in classes about Latin American culture in the U.S. and Europe. This shows that the film is still very important and relevant.

Film expert Sandra Brennan has said that most of Puenzo's films "offer probing, metaphorical portraits of characters and relationships in the face of larger sociopolitical issues." This means his movies often explore deep ideas about people and their connections, especially when facing big social or political challenges.
