Early Life and Background
Rubiales was born in Las Palmas on the Canary Islands. His father, Luis Manuel Rubiales López, was a primary school teacher. His mother, Ángeles Béjar, was a hairdresser. He grew up in Motril in the Province of Granada.
Playing Career as a Defender
Rubiales spent most of his playing career in the Segunda División. This is Spain's second-highest football league. He played for several teams. These included Guadix, Mallorca B, Lleida, Xerez, and Alicante CF.
He also played for Levante. With Levante, he helped the team get promoted to La Liga twice. This happened in 2004 and 2006. He made his first appearance in Spain's top league on 29 August 2004. He came on as a late substitute in a match against Real Sociedad.
In 2009, Rubiales joined Scottish Premier League team Hamilton Academical. He played three league matches there. After his third game, he decided to retire from playing football. He was 32 years old. He then went back to Spain to work for Levante in a different role.
Administrative Career in Football
Leading Spanish Footballers
In March 2010, Rubiales was chosen to be the president of the Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE). This organization represents football players in Spain. He left this job in November 2017. His goal was to become the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation.
President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation
Rubiales was elected as the RFEF president in May 2018. The RFEF is the main governing body for football in Spain.
One of his first big decisions as president was about the Spanish national men's team. He decided to remove the head coach, Julen Lopetegui. This happened just before the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The coach had been talking about becoming the new manager of Real Madrid without telling the RFEF first.
On 25 March 2023, the RFEF officially recognized the winners of the 1937 Copa de la España Libre. This team was Levante FC, which is now known as Levante UD. The RFEF said this win was equal to winning the Copa del Rey. Rubiales then gave the trophy to Levante's captain, Vicente Iborra, on 31 March.
Personal Life
Rubiales married a lawyer named Manuela Delicado Vega. They had three daughters together. They later separated but remained on good terms.
