A Spanish Writer's Life
Luis de Ulloa y Pereira was born in a town called Toro in Spain. His father was a lawyer and also part of the town's council. Luis got to study in Valladolid, where his uncle lived. However, he did not go to a university.
Early Life and Challenges
Luis really wanted to work at the royal court in Madrid. But he soon returned to his family home in Toro. He often ran out of money because he liked to gamble. He was married three times and became a widower twice.
Working as a Magistrate
Thanks to a powerful friend, Luis got an important job. He became a magistrate (a type of judge or official) for the city of León from 1625 to 1631. Later, he was a magistrate in Logroño from 1633 to 1637.
Famous Poem: La Raquel
While in Logroño, Luis published his most famous work. It was a long poem called La Raquel. This poem tells a story about King Alfonso VIII. It describes his sad relationship with a Jewish woman named Rahel la Fermosa.
Meeting Other Writers
In 1643, a very important person, the Count-Duke of Olivares, visited Luis in Toro. People say Luis was hurt in a duel while defending the Count-Duke. After this, Luis traveled to Madrid. There, he met many famous writers, including Luis de Góngora. He also welcomed writers to his home in Toro.
His Unique Poetry Style
Luis de Ulloa's poetry was similar to Góngora's style, called culteranismo. This style used complex words and ideas. However, Luis's poems were often clearer and easier to understand. Here is an example of his poetry:

Other Writings
Luis de Ulloa also wrote non-fiction. These were reflections on everyday life. One of these was Epístola a un caballero amigo, que vivía en Sevilla. In this letter, he praised life at the court in Madrid. He also wrote about his own life in Memorias familiares y literarias and Relaciones. These works shared his personal observations.
He also wrote plays for the theater. Some of his plays include La mujer contra el consejo, No muda el amor semblante, Porcia y Tancredo, and Pico y Canente.
