Early Life and Challenges

Luis really wanted to work at the royal court in Madrid. But he soon returned to his family home in Toro. He often ran out of money because he liked to gamble. He was married three times and became a widower twice.

Working as a Magistrate

Thanks to a powerful friend, Luis got an important job. He became a magistrate (a type of judge or official) for the city of León from 1625 to 1631. Later, he was a magistrate in Logroño from 1633 to 1637.

Famous Poem: La Raquel

While in Logroño, Luis published his most famous work. It was a long poem called La Raquel. This poem tells a story about King Alfonso VIII. It describes his sad relationship with a Jewish woman named Rahel la Fermosa.

Meeting Other Writers

In 1643, a very important person, the Count-Duke of Olivares, visited Luis in Toro. People say Luis was hurt in a duel while defending the Count-Duke. After this, Luis traveled to Madrid. There, he met many famous writers, including Luis de Góngora. He also welcomed writers to his home in Toro.

His Unique Poetry Style

Luis de Ulloa's poetry was similar to Góngora's style, called culteranismo. This style used complex words and ideas. However, Luis's poems were often clearer and easier to understand. Here is an example of his poetry:

Original Spanish English translation

¡Oh segura quietud, donde perfectos
percibe los acentos el oído,
y la vista distintos los objetos!
Dichoso aquél, que en su secreto olvido
pasa ignorado la distancia breve
del primer llanto al último gemido.

Oh, peaceful quiet, where perfect
sounds are heard by the ear,
and objects are clearly seen by the eye!
Happy is the one who, in secret quiet,
lives unnoticed through the short time
from their first cry to their last sigh.

Other Writings

Luis de Ulloa also wrote non-fiction. These were reflections on everyday life. One of these was Epístola a un caballero amigo, que vivía en Sevilla. In this letter, he praised life at the court in Madrid. He also wrote about his own life in Memorias familiares y literarias and Relaciones. These works shared his personal observations.
