Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Luke White (jr.) was an Irish politician who lived in the 1800s. He was the son of a very successful businessman and politician named Luke White (sr.). Luke White junior followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a Member of Parliament (MP) for County Longford in Ireland.

Who Was Luke White Jr.?

Luke White junior was born before 1789. He became a politician, just like his father. A Member of Parliament (MP) is someone chosen by people to represent them in the country's government. This government was called the House of Commons in the United Kingdom.

His Political Journey

Luke White junior tried to become an MP for County Longford several times. At first, he was part of a political group called the Whigs. Later, he supported Daniel O'Connell, a famous Irish leader. O'Connell's group, the Repeal Association, wanted Ireland to have more control over its own laws.

Luke White junior won elections in 1832, 1835, and 1841. However, after each of these wins, special groups in the House of Commons checked the results. They decided that his victories were not valid. So, his opponents were given the seats instead.

Despite these challenges, Luke White junior did serve a full term as an MP. He was a Member of Parliament from 1837 to 1841. After that, he did not run for election again. He passed away in 1854.

His Family's Political Legacy

Luke White junior was not the only politician in his family. His brothers, Samuel and Henry, also became Members of Parliament. His brother Henry later received a special title. He became a 'Baron', which is a type of noble title, in 1863.
