Lumbar puncture facts for kids
A lumbar puncture, often called a spinal tap, is a special medical test. Doctors use it to collect a small sample of fluid from around your brain and spinal cord. This fluid is called cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
Doctors do a spinal tap for a few important reasons. They might want to check the fluid for signs of diseases or infections. It can also help them measure or lower the pressure of the fluid inside your skull. Sometimes, they even use it to give medicine directly into the fluid.

What is Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)?
Cerebrospinal fluid, or CSF, is a clear, watery liquid that surrounds your brain and spinal cord. Think of it like a protective cushion. It helps to protect these important parts of your body from bumps and injuries. CSF also carries nutrients to your brain and removes waste products.
Why Do Doctors Do a Spinal Tap?
Doctors perform a spinal tap to help diagnose or treat certain health problems.
Checking for Infections
One main reason is to check for infections that affect the brain or spinal cord. For example, if a doctor suspects meningitis, which is an infection of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord, a spinal tap can help confirm it. By looking at the CSF, they can see if there are signs of bacteria or viruses.
Looking for Other Conditions
A spinal tap can also help diagnose other conditions. These might include certain autoimmune diseases or other problems affecting the nervous system. The fluid can show clues about what might be happening inside your body.
Measuring Pressure
The amount of CSF in your head and spine creates a certain pressure. If this pressure is too high or too low, it can cause problems. During a spinal tap, doctors can measure this pressure. If the pressure is too high, sometimes removing a little fluid can help relieve it.
Giving Medicine
In some cases, doctors use a spinal tap to deliver medicine directly into the CSF. This can be useful for treating certain cancers or infections that are hard to reach with regular medicines.
How is a Spinal Tap Done?
A spinal tap is usually done in a hospital or clinic. Here's a simple idea of how it works:
- You will lie on your side or sit up, usually curling your back. This helps the doctor find the right spot.
- The doctor will clean a small area on your lower back.
- They will give you a shot of numbing medicine (a local anesthetic) so you don't feel much pain.
- Then, a very thin needle is carefully inserted between the bones in your lower spine. This needle goes into the space where the CSF is.
- A small amount of fluid is collected into special tubes. This usually takes only a few minutes.
- After the fluid is collected, the needle is removed, and a small bandage is placed over the spot.
It's important to stay very still during the procedure. Most people feel some pressure, but it shouldn't be very painful because of the numbing medicine.
Is a Spinal Tap Safe?
A spinal tap is generally a safe procedure. Like any medical test, there can be some minor side effects. The most common one is a headache afterwards, which usually goes away with rest and fluids. Doctors are very careful to make sure the procedure is as safe and comfortable as possible.
