About Luna Island
Luna Island is found in Niagara Falls, New York. It sits right between two other important spots: Goat Island and Niagara Falls State Park.
Island's Location and Size
This small island is nestled between the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. These are two of the three amazing waterfalls that make up the famous Niagara Falls. Luna Island is about 130 feet (40 meters) wide. It stretches about 350 feet (107 meters) long, going upstream from the falls.
What the Island is Made Of
The island's base is made of a type of rock called dolomite. There's also a concrete base near the waterfalls. The southern part of the island is covered with White cedar trees. You can find shrubs growing along the northern end. The first wooden bridge to the island was built in the 1800s. It was later replaced in the 20th century with a newer one.
Best Views of the Falls
Luna Island offers incredible views of the waterfalls. You can also see the falls from nearby Goat Island. Both islands can be reached by special bridges for people walking. These bridges cross the fast-moving water of the Niagara River before it plunges over the falls.
When you are on Luna Island, you can walk right up close to the Bridal Veil Falls and American Falls. It's an amazing experience to be just a few feet away! Sometimes, people from the nearby Schoellkopf Geological Museum visit Luna Island. They bring photos and answer questions about the history and geology of Niagara Falls.
Why is it Called Luna Island?
The island's name comes from something magical you can see there. If you stand on the island during a full moon, you might see "lunar rainbows." These are rainbows created by the moonlight shining through the mist from Niagara Falls. It's a truly unique sight!
