Lurrie Bell's Musical Journey
Lurrie started playing guitar when he was just six years old. As a teenager, he got even better by playing with famous Chicago blues musicians. Some of these legends included Eddy Clearwater, Big Walter Horton, and Eddie Taylor.
In the mid-1970s, Lurrie joined Koko Taylor's band, the Blues Machine. He toured with them for four years. He first recorded music in 1977. He appeared on his father's album Heartaches and Pain. He also played on Eddie C. Campbell's album King of the Jungle.
Around that time, he started a band called The Sons of Blues. Billy Branch was one of the musicians in this group. Three of their songs were on a collection album called Living Chicago Blues Vol. 3 in 1978. In 1989, Lurrie released his first solo album, Everybody Wants To Win, with JSP Records.
Overcoming Challenges
Lurrie Bell's career seemed to be going well. Blues fans around the world saw him as a young, talented musician. However, he faced some personal challenges for many years. These challenges sometimes kept him from performing regularly.
He began to make a comeback in 1995. His album Mercurial Son was very well-received. This was the first of several albums he released with the Delmark record label. After this, he released more albums and started performing more often. He played in Chicago clubs and at blues festivals.
Collaborations and Awards
In 2007, Lurrie Bell was featured on a CD and DVD called Gettin' Up. This recording was live at Buddy Guy's Legends and Rosa's. He played with his father, Carey Bell, on this album. Sadly, Carey Bell passed away in May 2007. This recording became his father's last one.
In 2014, Lurrie Bell won a Blues Music Award. He won for his song "Blues in My Soul" in the 'Song of the Year' group. He was also nominated for four other awards that year. In 2015, he won another Blues Music Award. This time it was in the 'Traditional Blues Male Artist' group.
Lurrie Bell's 2016 album, Can't Shake This Feeling, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. Matthew Skoller played the harmonica on this album. He also produced Lurrie's earlier albums, Let's Talk About Love and The Devil Ain't Got No Music.
