Lurvills Delight facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lurvills Delight was a popular fizzy drink made in Wales between 1896 and 1910. It was a special kind of soft drink because it had a unique blend of natural ingredients.

This interesting drink was created in 1895 by twin brothers, Harold and Iolo Lewis, who lived in a village called Ynyshir.

The Unique Recipe

The Lewis twins made Lurvills Delight with a special mix of ingredients. It included stinging nettles, Dock leaves, and a flavour from Juniper berry extract. These natural ingredients gave the drink its unique taste.

A Drink That Helped People

What makes Lurvills Delight even more special is how its profits were used. The money earned from selling the drink helped 150 coal miners and their families from their village to move to the United States. They emigrated, which means they moved to a new country to start a new life, settling in cities like Pittsburgh and Denver.

The production of Lurvills Delight stopped in 1910. This happened because there weren't enough Dock leaves in the local area to make the drink anymore.

The Lewis Twins' New Venture

After Lurvills Delight stopped being made, the Lewis twins moved to Fochriw. There, they started a successful business making leather furniture. This company is still in business today!

The Return of Lurvills Delight

Many years later, in September 2016, Lurvills Delight was brought back! A company called Lurvills Delight Ltd started making "The Original Botanical Blend" bottled soft drink again in Wales. In 2017, a shop in London called Borough Wines & Beers began selling Lurvills Delight as part of its non-alcoholic drink selection.
