Luther Dean "Ticky" Burden (February 28, 1953 – October 29, 2015) was a talented American basketball player. He was known by his nickname "Ticky." He played professionally in both the NBA and the ABA.

Early Life and High School Basketball

Luther Burden was born in Haines City, Florida. He grew up and attended Philip Schuyler High School in Albany, New York. During his time there, he was a key member of the school's basketball team.

College Career and International Play

Burden continued his basketball journey at the University of Utah. While in college, he also played for the United States men's national basketball team. He competed in the 1974 FIBA World Championship. His team won the bronze medal in this international competition.

Setting Records at Utah

In 1975, during his junior year at Utah, Burden showed amazing skill. He averaged 28.7 points per game. He also set a record for the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). He made 359 field goals in a single season. This showed how good he was at scoring points.

Professional Basketball Journey

After his junior year, Luther Burden was allowed to turn professional early. This was due to a special "hardship case" rule. Both the Virginia Squires (from the ABA) and the New York Knicks (from the NBA) drafted him.

Playing in the ABA and NBA

Burden chose to start his professional career with the Virginia Squires. He played there for one season. After that, he joined the New York Knicks. He hoped for a better experience in New York.

During the 1976-77 NBA season, Burden played in 61 games for the Knicks. He was a backup player, averaging about 10 minutes and 5.7 points per game. However, in the next season, his coach became unhappy with his defensive play. Burden was later released from the team.

Later Life and Legacy

In his later years, Luther Burden worked with the YWCA organization. He helped mentor young people and coached basketball. He faced health challenges starting in 2012. Luther Burden passed away on October 29, 2015, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
