Early Life and Beginnings
Growing Up in Ohio
Erick Lee Purkhiser was born in Akron, Ohio. He grew up in a nearby town called Stow. He went to and graduated from Stow High School.
Meeting Poison Ivy
In 1972, Lux Interior met Kristy Wallace in Sacramento. She later became known as Poison Ivy. They met when he and a friend gave her a ride while she was hitchhiking.
Forming The Cramps
The couple started their band after moving from California to Ohio in 1973. Later, in 1975, they moved to New York. There, they quickly became a part of the exciting punk music scene.
Musical Style and Influence
The Name Lux Interior
Lux Interior got his stage name from an old car advertisement. Before that, he thought about using names like Vip Vop or Raven Beauty. His wife, Poison Ivy, chose her name after a special dream she had.
What is Psychobilly?
Lux Interior and Poison Ivy called their music style "psychobilly." This word was also used in a song by Johnny Cash called "One Piece at a Time." They also used the term "gothabilly." The band later said these were just "carny terms" to get people interested in their music.
The Cramps' Performances
The Cramps were known for their unique and energetic live shows. They performed their last concert in November 2006.

Voice Acting for SpongeBob
In 2002, Lux Interior used his voice for a character on the TV show SpongeBob SquarePants. He was the lead singer of a bird rock band called the Bird Brains. They sang a song called "Underwater Sun." Tom Kenny, who voices SpongeBob, attended Lux Interior's memorial service in 2009.
Art and Photography
Lux Interior was also a painter, especially during his college years. He was interested in visual art. He collected 3D cameras and loved them. He used his collection to make his own artworks and collages.

Lux Interior's Passing
Lux Interior passed away on February 4, 2009, at 4:30 AM. He was at Glendale Memorial Hospital in California. The cause of his death was an aortic dissection, which is a serious heart condition.
Family and Memorial
He was survived by his wife, Ivy, and his two brothers, Michael and Ronald Purkhiser. He also had a son from a previous marriage named Mischa Shane Graef. A memorial service for Lux Interior was held on February 21. His brother Michael shared some memories about their relationship in a newspaper article.
