History of Stow
Stow gets its name from Joshua Stow, who was the first owner of the land. Joshua Stow was part of a group that explored and mapped the Connecticut Western Reserve in 1796. This area is where Cleveland is today. Even though he never lived in Stow, he spent a lot of time and money helping the area grow. He once said it was "one of the prettiest and most romantic spots in the Western Reserve."
The land that became Stow Township was originally a square area of 25 square miles (65 km2). Joshua Stow bought it for $14,154. Before European settlers arrived, a tribe of Seneca Native Americans lived nearby.
The first settler in Stow Township was William Walker, who arrived in 1802. He built his cabin thinking it was in Hudson Township. But in 1804, when Stow Township was officially mapped, it turned out his house was actually in Stow. Walker bought the land his home was on and stayed there.
In 1804, William Wetmore, Joshua Stow's land agent, moved to Stow with his family and other settlers. They built a cabin near what is now the intersection of Darrow Road and Kent Road. Stow Township officially started in 1808. It was first part of Portage County and then became part of Summit County in 1840.
Most of the original Stow Township is now part of the city of Stow. However, parts of the original township also became other nearby towns. Munroe Falls started in 1809 and became a village in 1838. Cuyahoga Falls began to develop in 1825 and became a town in 1837. Over time, Cuyahoga Falls and Munroe Falls took over more parts of the original Stow Township. Silver Lake became a village in 1918 from land that was once part of Stow. The rest of Stow Township became a village in 1957 and then a city after the 1960 census.
Geography and Climate
Stow is located in the eastern part of Summit County, right next to Portage County. It shares borders with several other cities and townships. These include Kent to the east, Tallmadge and Munroe Falls to the south, Hudson to the north, and Cuyahoga Falls to the west and south.
The city covers a total area of about 17.32 square miles (44.86 km2). Most of this area, about 17.09 square miles (44.26 km2), is land, and a small part, about 0.23 square miles (0.60 km2), is water.
Stow has a climate known as a humid continental climate. This means it usually has warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Spring and autumn seasons are moderate and can change a lot. While Stow isn't in the main "Lake Erie snowbelt," it does get some lake-effect snow sometimes. This happens when winds blow across Lake Erie, picking up moisture and dropping it as snow. Stow is in the "secondary snowbelt," so it gets less snow than areas closer to the lake.
