History of Munroe Falls

Munroe Falls is part of an area once known as the Connecticut Western Reserve. Before European settlers arrived, different Native American tribes lived here. The land was first surveyed in 1796.

Early Settlements and Names

The first settlers came to this area in 1809. Among them were Francis Kelsey and William Stow. William Stow built a log house where Ohio State Route 91 and Munroe Falls Avenue are today. Francis Kelsey built a sawmill on the south side of the Cuyahoga River. A gristmill was also built on the north side. The village was first called Kelsey's Mills after Francis Kelsey.

In 1816, the first school in Munroe Falls was built. A wooden dam was added in 1817 to power the mills. At this time, the village's name changed to Florence.

The Munroe Brothers and Their Vision

Around 1836, two brothers, William and Edmund Munroe, arrived from Boston. They bought the two mills and about 250 acres of land. They planned a new village and named it Munroe Falls. The village officially became a town on October 26, 1838.

The Munroe brothers had big dreams for Munroe Falls. They wanted it to become a major center for business. They even started the "Munroe Falls Manufacturing Co." in 1837. This company aimed to make cotton, flour, paper, and silk. They also started a bank. For a while, the local economy grew quickly. However, their plans did not work out. The company and bank failed, leaving many people with worthless money. After about 10 years, the Munroe brothers lost their properties.

Transportation and Industry Growth

The Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal opened in 1840. It passed right through Munroe Falls. This canal helped transport goods. It closed around 1870. In 1840, Munroe Falls also became part of the new Summit County.

In 1866, the old gristmill was bought by the Cleveland Paper Company. They changed it to make paper. The building burned down a few years later. A new factory was built on the same spot. Today, Sonoco Products owns this factory. In 1884, railroad tracks were laid where the canal used to be. These tracks were later doubled in 1900.

Becoming a City

In 1921, Munroe Falls became a village. This was done to avoid being taken over by the nearby town of Stow. However, the village found it hard to support itself. So, in 1925, they held elections to become part of the county again.

The community got a new town hall in the 1960s. This building is still used as the City Hall today. It was first built in 1885 as the Munroe Falls Schoolhouse. Munroe Falls officially became a city in 1991.

Cuyahoga River Restoration

In the early 2000s, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found a problem with the Cuyahoga River. The oxygen levels were too low because of a dam in Munroe Falls. To fix this, the dam, built in 1903, was removed. This project started in 2005 and finished in 2006. It helped clean and restore the river.
