History of Luxor
Early Mining Days
Luxor was created by the Jamison Coal and Coke Company. They built homes for the people who worked in their nearby coal mines. The main mine, called Luxor or No. 1 Mine, started working in the 1890s.
This mine dug up bituminous coal from underground. By 1897, about 179 people worked there. The Pennsylvania Railroad helped transport the coal. By 1910, the mining area had over 400 coking ovens. These ovens turned coal into coke, a fuel used in making steel.
Later Mining and Closure
In the 1940s, another company, Sekora Coal, started a different type of mining. They operated a strip mine, which digs coal from the surface. This mine was northeast of the older No. 1 mine. All coal mining in Luxor eventually stopped in 1972.

Post Office and Population
Luxor still has its own post office, which opened in 1894. It also has its own ZIP code, 15662. The area covered by this ZIP code has about 271 people living there. The old mining company store, which was once a central place, has been taken down. It used to be near where the post office is now.
Community Services
The Luxor Volunteer Fire Department served the community for many years. However, it closed down in March 2021. This happened because there were not enough people volunteering to join.
