The Great Voyage Begins

Luís Pires was a brave explorer from Portugal. He lived during a time when Portugal was exploring new parts of the world. These voyages helped connect different continents. Pires was chosen to be a captain on a very important trip.

This journey was led by Pedro Álvares Cabral. Cabral's fleet was very big. It had many ships and sailors. Their main goal was to sail all the way to India. They wanted to find a sea route for trade.

A Sudden Storm

The fleet started its long journey from Portugal. They sailed past the Cape Verde Islands. These islands are off the coast of Africa. After leaving the islands, a powerful storm hit the ships.

The storm was very strong and dangerous. It caused a lot of trouble for the fleet. Luís Pires's ship was badly affected by the bad weather.

Forced to Return Home

Because of the storm, Luís Pires could not continue the journey. He was forced to turn his ship around. He had to sail back to Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal.

This meant that Luís Pires never reached Brazil. He also did not make it to India. These were the main destinations of Cabral's expedition. Despite this, he was still part of the historic fleet that set out on this important voyage of discovery.
