The Calochortus lyallii, also known as Lyall's mariposa lily, is a beautiful flowering plant found in North America. It belongs to the lily family. This special lily grows naturally only in certain areas. You can find it in the Province of British Columbia in western Canada. It also grows in the State of Washington in the northwestern United States.

This lily prefers to grow east of the Cascade mountains. It lives in the mountains and their lower hills. While it seems to be doing well in Washington, it's considered a "blue-listed species" in Canada. This means it's a plant that is at risk, but not yet endangered. It likes dry or moderately moist open forests. You can often find it growing with other plants like Ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, pinegrass, and elk sedge.

What it Looks Like

The Lyall's mariposa lily is a perennial plant. This means it lives for more than two years. It grows from a bulb, which is like a small underground storage unit. The plant can grow up to about 50 centimeters (nearly 20 inches) tall. Its flowers are bell-shaped and stand upright. They are usually white or a light purple color. You might also see darker marks on their petals, which makes them even more interesting!
