Lynne Heather Walling (born October 9, 1958 – died May 28, 2021) was an American mathematician. She was an expert in number theory, which is a branch of mathematics that studies whole numbers and their properties. She was known for her important research in this field. Lynne Walling worked as a professor at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom.

Early Life and Education

Lynne Walling was born on October 9, 1958. She grew up in northern California, in the United States. She started her college studies at the University of California, San Diego.

After a two-year break, she continued her education at Sonoma State University. She first studied accounting, but then changed her focus to mathematics. She earned her bachelor's degree in mathematics.

In 1987, Lynne Walling received her Ph.D. (a very high university degree) from Dartmouth College. Her advisor, who guided her research, was Thomas Richard Shemanske.

Career and Later Life

After finishing her Ph.D., Lynne Walling began teaching. She taught at St. Olaf College in Minnesota. During this time, she lived in an old farmhouse. This house did not have indoor plumbing. She built a hand-operated pump to get water. This allowed her to put a bathtub in her kitchen, next to a wood-burning stove.

In 1990, she became an Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder. This was a "tenure-track" position, meaning she could become a permanent professor. She received tenure in 1995. This meant she had a permanent job at the university. In 2000, she became a full Professor.

In 2007, Lynne Walling moved to the University of Bristol in the UK. There, she became a "reader" in mathematics. This is a senior academic position, similar to a professor. From 2011 to 2015, she was the Head of Pure Mathematics at the university. From 2018, she was the Director of the Institute of Pure Mathematics.

Awards and Honors

In 2012, Lynne Walling received a special honor. She became a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. This is a recognition given to mathematicians who have made important contributions to the field.
