Lynnhaven River facts for kids
The Lynnhaven River is a special kind of waterway called a tidal estuary. It's located in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in the United States. This river flows into the big Chesapeake Bay near Cape Henry.
The Lynnhaven River has a small area of land that drains into it, called a watershed. This area covers about 64 square miles (166 square kilometers). The river ends at Lynnhaven Bay. Long ago, this river was very famous for its delicious oysters. But over time, pollution and dirty water runoff caused the oyster numbers to drop.
Good news! People are working hard to bring the river back to health. A group called Lynnhaven River Now is leading this effort. They work from the Brock Environmental Center. There's even a big plan to help restore the whole Lynnhaven River area. The United States Congress is thinking about this plan.
History of the Lynnhaven River
The Lynnhaven River area has a rich history. Some old and important homes are located nearby. These include the Adam Keeling House, the Adam Thoroughgood House, and the Ferry Plantation House. This area was also where one of the first colonial settlements, Henry Town, was built a long time ago.
In the early colonial days, the bay was a great place for ships to stop. It was a safe and easy harbor for boats traveling along the coast.
Did you know that many places in Virginia Beach are named after a town in England? Adam Thoroughgood, an early settler, came from a town called King's Lynn in Norfolk, England. That's why you see names like Lynnhaven River, Lynn Shores, Thalia Lynn, and Lynnhaven Road all over Virginia Beach!
