The Sweet Story of Lyons Maid Ice Cream

Early Days and Popular Treats

Lyons Maid became very popular, especially during the 1970s. During this time, they sold a huge variety of ice lollies. These lollies often had exciting connections to popular TV shows and movies.

They also came with cool free gifts inside the wrappers. The wrappers themselves were often very creative. Sometimes, they even had cartoon strips for you to read!

Fun Tie-ins and Free Gifts

Imagine buying an ice lolly and getting a surprise! Lyons Maid did this often. For example, they had a special tie-in with the TV show Space: 1999. Inside the wrappers, you could find free cards about the episodes.

They also made Star Wars lollies. These came with free masks of famous characters. The wrappers even had fun facts about the movies. Other popular tie-ins included lollies for The Six Million Dollar Man TV series and Superman. There was even a "Goal" lolly. Its sticks had pictures of famous football players of that time.

Lyons Maid had a very special logo. It was sometimes called the 'Good Time Sign'. But most people working at the company called it the 'Dancing Children'. This logo was first created by an advertising company called Young & Rubicam.

It helped people spot the brand in sweet shops. Later, it appeared on ice cream packaging and on ice cream vans. The 'Dancing Children' logo was used on all their products. It was also seen on shop signs for many years.

In 1992, Lyons Maid was sold to another big company, Nestlé. Nestlé then mixed its own blue-and-white ice cream logo with the Lyons Maid name. They also kept the three dancing children. This continued until 1998. After that, the Lyons Maid brand name was changed to the standard Nestlé ice cream logo.

A Rival and a Comeback

Lyons Maid had a main competitor in the ice cream world. This was Wall's ice cream. Wall's is now owned by a company called Unilever.

In 2008, something exciting happened. The Lyons Maid brand was brought back! A company called R&R Ice Cream decided to restart it. A marketing manager from R&R, Charlotte Hambling, explained why. She said they wanted to bring back the "great nostalgia" of the brand. Many people remembered Lyons Maid fondly. She also mentioned the brand's "strong consumer heritage" and "high levels of consumer awareness and trust."

With new Lyons Maid products, they aimed to bring back family favorites. They wanted to make the brand popular again for everyone to enjoy.
