A Sweet History
Lyons Maid was very successful, especially during the 1970s. During this time, they sold a huge variety of ice lollies. Many of these lollies were linked to popular TV shows and movies. They often came with free gifts inside the wrappers, which made them even more exciting for kids!
Fun Ice Lollies and Free Gifts
Imagine getting a free gift with your ice cream! Lyons Maid did this often. For example, they had ice lollies connected to the TV show Space: 1999. These came with free cards about the episodes. They also made Star Wars lollies that had free masks of characters and fun facts about the movie on the wrappers.
Other popular tie-ins included lollies for The Six Million Dollar Man TV series and Superman. There was even a "Goal" lolly where the lolly sticks had pictures of famous football players of that time.
The Dancing Children Logo
The Lyons Maid brand had a special logo that many people remember. It was sometimes called the 'Good Time Sign' but was more often known as the 'Dancing Children'. This logo was created by an advertising company called Young & Rubicam. It helped people spot Lyons Maid products in sweet shops, on packaging, and on ice cream vans.
The 'Dancing Children' logo was used on almost all Lyons Maid products and shop signs for many years. In 1992, Lyons Maid was sold to Nestlé. Nestlé then combined its own blue-and-white ice cream logo with the Lyons Maid name and the three dancing children. This continued until 1998, when the Lyons Maid brand name was changed to just the standard Nestlé ice cream logo.
For a long time, Lyons Maid's main competitor was Wall's ice cream, which is now owned by Unilever.
The Brand's Return
In 2008, the Lyons Maid brand made a comeback! A company called R&R Ice Cream decided to bring it back. The marketing manager at R&R said that they wanted to bring back the brand because people felt a lot of nostalgia for it. They knew that many families remembered Lyons Maid and trusted the brand.
With the new Lyons Maid products, R&R Ice Cream aimed to bring back popular family favorites. They wanted to re-establish the brand and remind everyone of the good times associated with Lyons Maid ice creams.
