Lysippos ( Greek: Λύσιππος) was a very famous Greek sculptor. He lived in the 4th century BC, a long time ago! He is known as one of the three greatest sculptors of the Classical Greek era. The other two were Scopas and Praxiteles. Lysippos helped bring in the Hellenistic period of art.

Who Was Lysippos?

Lysippos was born around 390 BC in a place called Sicyon, in Greece. He became a master sculptor. He created many amazing statues during his lifetime. He lived to be about 90 years old, which was very old for that time!

Why His Art Is Special

Lysippos changed how sculptors made statues. Before him, statues often looked stiff. Lysippos made his figures look more natural and alive. He focused on making bodies look realistic and in motion. He also made the heads of his statues smaller and the bodies taller. This made his figures look more graceful and heroic.

Finding His Original Works

It is hard for art experts to study Lysippos's work. This is because it is tough to tell his original statues from copies. Lysippos had a very large workshop. Many students and helpers worked with him. They learned his style and made their own versions.

Also, people loved his art so much that many copies were made. These copies were created even after he died. They were made during the Hellenistic and Roman times. This means there are many statues that look like his, but might not be his actual handiwork.

Famous Works Attributed to Him

One famous bronze statue is called the Victorious Youth. It is also known as the Getty bronze. This statue was found around 1972. Many art experts believe it might have been made by Lysippos himself. It is a great example of his style.
