Lyubov Sobol was born in the town of Lobnya, near Moscow, Russia. She was a great student and finished high school with a silver medal in 2004.
After high school, she decided to study law. She first went to the State Law Academy in Moscow. While studying, she also worked at a local court. Later, she attended the famous Moscow State University and graduated with honors in 2011.
Political Career and Activism
Getting Started in Politics
In 2011, Sobol began to get involved in politics. She joined protest rallies and volunteered to help people in need, like those affected by floods in the city of Krymsk. She also worked as an election observer to make sure that voting was fair.
Starting in March 2011, she used her law skills to work for the RosPil Project. This project, started by Alexei Navalny, aimed to stop corruption in how the government spent money. Because of this important work, the Russian version of Forbes magazine named her one of the most influential new faces of 2011.
In 2012, she was elected to the Russian Opposition Coordination Council. This was a group created to help organize the opposition movement in Russia.
Running for Office
In 2016, Sobol announced she wanted to run for a seat in the State Duma, which is a part of Russia's government, similar to a parliament. However, she later decided to withdraw from the race.
In 2019, she tried to run for a seat in the Moscow City Duma, which is the local government for the city of Moscow. During this time, she took part in many protests.
Challenges and Arrests
As an opposition figure, Sobol has faced many challenges. In December 2020, she was detained by police after trying to speak with a person connected to the poisoning of Alexei Navalny. A few days later, authorities searched her home and opened a case against her.
In January 2021, she was taken away by police during a protest in Moscow that supported Alexei Navalny. Later that year, a court said she had broken rules related to COVID-19 and placed her under restrictions for a year and a half. Sobol has said these cases against her were because of her political views. In October 2021, the Russian police issued a warrant for her arrest.
When Alexei Navalny died in prison in February 2024, Sobol spoke out. She reminded people that he had been healthy before he was poisoned in 2020 and had recovered in Germany. She stated that she believed the government was responsible for his death.

In August 2021, Sobol announced that she and her husband had divorced. Around the same time, news reports said that she had left Russia and flown to Turkey.
