László Paskai (born May 8, 1927 – died August 17, 2015) was an important Hungarian cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church. He was a member of the Order of Friars Minor, also known as the Franciscans. From 1987 to 2002, he served as the archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, which is a very high position in the church in Hungary.

Cardinal Paskai was one of the church leaders who helped choose Pope Benedict XVI in 2005. He also held a special role as the Spiritual Protector and Chaplain General for a group called the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem from 2004 to 2012.

Early Life of László Paskai

László Paskai was born in Szeged, Hungary. His parents had become Roman Catholic before he was born. Sadly, his parents died during the The Holocaust, a terrible time in history.

Becoming a Priest and Bishop

László Paskai became a priest when he was 23 years old, on March 3, 1951. He joined the Order of Friars Minor, a religious group known for helping others. After becoming a priest, he worked in the Nagyvarad area. Later, he went to Budapest to study more.

From 1952 to 1955, he worked in Szeged, helping the bishop with ceremonies. Then, he taught and worked as a librarian at a seminary (a school for priests) from 1955 to 1962. He continued to teach and guide students until 1965. Eventually, he became the head of the Central Seminary in Budapest.

On March 2, 1978, he was chosen to lead the church in Veszprém temporarily. On the same day, he became a bishop.

Leading the Church in Hungary

Pope John Paul II made him the Archbishop of Veszprém on March 31, 1979. A few years later, on March 3, 1987, he was appointed the leader of the church in Hungary and the Archbishop of Esztergom.

On June 28, 1988, he was made a Cardinal-Priest. This means he became a cardinal, a very important advisor to the Pope. In 1993, the church areas of Esztergom and Budapest were joined together. This made Cardinal Paskai the first Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest. He retired from this role in 2002.

Cardinal Paskai met with U.S. President George H. W. Bush on October 13, 1989.

Later Years and Retirement

After he retired, Cardinal Paskai lived in Esztergom, near the beautiful Esztergom Basilica. In 2005, he took part in the Papal conclave, which is the meeting where cardinals choose a new Pope. He helped elect Pope Benedict XVI.

On July 17, 2011, he led a special church service for Otto von Habsburg in St. Stephen's Basilica in Budapest. Otto von Habsburg was the last Crown Prince of Hungary. Cardinal Paskai passed away on August 17, 2015, at the age of 88.
