Líjar's Unique History
The War with France
On October 14, 1883, Líjar declared war on France. This happened because King Alfonso XII of Spain was insulted while passing through Paris. The people of Líjar felt very strongly about this. They believed their king was treated badly by some French people.
A War Without Fighting
Even though Líjar declared war, no actual fighting ever took place. It was more of a symbolic act to show their loyalty to their king. The "war" lasted for exactly 100 years. In 1983, Líjar officially declared peace with France. This unique story makes Líjar a special place in history.
