Múscraige facts for kids
The Múscraighe (pronounced MUSS-krah-ree) were an important ancient Irish people. They lived in the area we now call Munster, a province in Ireland. This group of people were descendants of Cairpre Músc. He was the son of Conaire Cóem, who was a famous High King of Ireland. A High King was a very powerful ruler over many smaller kingdoms.
The Múscraighe were closely related to other groups. These included the Corcu Duibne and Corcu Baiscind, both also from Munster. They were also related to the Dál Riata from Ulster in Ireland and from Scotland. All these groups were known as the Síl Conairi in old Irish and Scottish stories. A much older ancestor of the Múscraighe was the legendary king Conaire Mór.

Where the Múscraighe Lived
The Múscraighe people had several smaller kingdoms. These were spread out across the province of Munster. The biggest and most important areas they ruled were in what is now central County Cork. These areas are called Muskerry West and Muskerry East today.
Múscraighe Territories Over Time
The Múscraighe were an important group before the 6th century. This was before another powerful group, the Eóganachta, became very strong. At that time, the territory of Múscraige Mittaine did not go south of the River Lee. Even though the river now cuts through the modern Muskerry areas.
The Múscraighe were divided into different family groups or branches. These branches were called septs. Each sept lived in a specific area. Here are some of the main Múscraighe septs and where they lived:
