The M'Chigeeng First Nation, also known as West Bay, is a community of Ojibwe people. They are one of the many First Nations in Ontario, Canada. This community is located in the Manitoulin District.

As of December 2018, there were 2623 people registered with the M'Chigeeng First Nation. About 939 of these people live on their own land. This land is called the M'Chigeeng 22 Indian Reserve. It covers an area of 3094.7 hectares (about 7647 acres) on Manitoulin Island.

Community Leadership and Governance

The M'Chigeeng First Nation chooses its leaders every three years. These leaders help guide the community.

Current Leadership

The First Nation is currently led by Chief Morgan Hare. There are also ten Councillors who work with the Chief. They are: Jean Debassige, Ray Corbiere, James Panamick, Charles Beaudin, Robert Beaudin, Kim Aelick, Kevin Eshkawkogan, Ross Armstrong, Andrew Bisson, and Earl Debassige. Their current term lasts until September 2026.

Joining Forces with Other Nations

The M'Chigeeng First Nation is part of a larger group. This group is called the United Chiefs & Councils of Manitoulin Island. It's like a team of leaders from different First Nations. They work together on important issues for their communities.

Community Life and Culture

The M'Chigeeng First Nation is a lively community. They have their own radio station and host a special film festival. These activities help share their culture and language.

Local Radio Station: CHYF-FM

In 2010, a new radio station started broadcasting in M'Chigeeng. It is called CHYF-FM. The idea for the station came from Anong Migwans Beam. She wanted a radio station that would help keep the Ojibwe language strong. The station plays educational shows and music. It helps people learn and use the Ojibwe language every day.

Weengushk International Film Festival

M'Chigeeng is also the main home for the annual Weengushk International Film Festival. This festival celebrates movies and storytelling. Some events for the festival also happen in other towns on Manitoulin Island. It's a great way to enjoy films and learn about different cultures.
