Dhurandhar was born in Kolhapur, a city in Maharashtra, India. He went to Rajaram High School in Kolhapur. In 1890, he was accepted into the J.J. School of Art in Bombay (now Mumbai).
At the art school, he studied under a famous artist named John Griffiths. Dhurandhar was a very talented student. He won many awards for his artwork while he was studying. He finished his art education in 1895.
A Career in Art
After graduating, Dhurandhar was offered a job at the same J.J. School of Art in 1896. He spent his entire career working there. In 1910, he became the Head Master of the school. This was a very important position.
Later, in 1918, he was made the Inspector of Drawing and Craft. He held this job until 1931. Before he retired, he also served as the Vice-Principal for two years. In 1938, Dhurandhar was recognized for his artistic skills. He was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
His Artistic Style and Works
Dhurandhar was a very busy and creative artist. He made thousands of paintings and illustrations. Many of his works showed the city of Bombay and its people. He also painted scenes from Hindu stories and myths.
Some of his illustrations were even turned into prints. These were used in books like Women of India (1920) by Otto Rothfield. Dhurandhar also designed many postcards. He drew pictures for other books, such as By-Ways of Bombay (1912) and Deccan Nursery Tales. He even drew cartoons for Gujarati magazines.
In 1926, a ruler named Maharaja Bhawanrao Shriniwasrao Pant Pratinidhi asked Dhurandhar to create paintings about the life of Shivaji. Shivaji was a great Indian warrior king.
